Iron Scrap Rate Today in Bangalore: How Iron & Steel Scrap Is Priced

Iron is the heaviest scrap in most Bangalore homes - old almirahs, grills, cots and gates. Here is how the iron scrap rate is set, why heavy and light iron are priced differently, and how to make sure every kilogram is weighed honestly.

Search for the iron scrap rate today and you will find a dozen different numbers. That is not because someone is lying - it is because "iron scrap" is several different materials, each with its own price. A thick steel girder, a thin tin sheet and a rusted cot frame are all iron, but a buyer values them very differently. This guide explains how iron and steel scrap is graded and priced in Bangalore, what moves the rate day to day, and how to sell your iron without losing money on the scale.

What sets the iron scrap rate today?

Iron scrap is a raw material for steel. Re-rolling mills and induction furnaces melt it into new bars and sections, so the scrap price closely follows domestic steel demand. When construction is busy, mills buy more scrap and rates firm up; during slow periods and heavy monsoon months, demand can soften. Imported scrap prices, sponge-iron prices and transport costs also feed into what mills pay aggregators - and what aggregators can pass on to doorstep sellers.

  • Domestic steel and construction demand - the single biggest driver.
  • Prices of alternatives such as sponge iron and imported melting scrap.
  • Diesel and freight cost between your home, the godown and the mill.
  • The grade, thickness and cleanliness of your material.
  • How many middlemen sit between you and the mill.

Heavy iron vs light iron: why grade matters

Buyers sort iron into broad grades. Thick, dense pieces melt with less loss and fetch the best rate. Thin, coated or rusty pieces lose more in the furnace and are priced lower. Knowing which grade your items fall into is the fastest way to judge whether a quote is fair.

Common iron and steel scrap grades in household lots
GradeTypical household itemsWhat affects the price
Heavy melting (HMS)Girders, angle iron, thick rods, gate framesThickness; best-paying iron grade
Light / mixed ironAlmirahs, cots, chairs, grillsSheet thickness, paint, attached wood or plastic
Tin / thin sheetPaint tins, biscuit tins, roofing sheetsThin gauge and coating; lowest iron rate
Cast ironOld motor bodies, pipes, machine partsBrittle, dense; priced separately from steel
Stainless steelUtensils, sinks, railingsNickel content (grade 304 vs 202); higher than mild steel
Rusted / mixed scrapBicycle frames, mixed small partsRust loss and non-metal content

How to calculate your iron scrap payment

Multiply net weight by the agreed rate for each grade, then add the totals. For example, a hypothetical lot of 60 kg light iron at ₹25/kg plus 20 kg heavy iron at ₹30/kg comes to ₹1,500 + ₹600 = ₹2,100 before any agreed charges. If the same 80 kg were priced as one mixed lot at ₹25/kg you would get ₹2,000 - separating grades earned an extra ₹100. These are illustrative numbers, not today's market rate.

Weighing iron honestly at your door

  • Ask for a digital platform scale and check it reads zero before loading.
  • Weigh each grade separately and note every reading.
  • Deduct the weight of any sack, rope or trolley used to hold the scrap.
  • Remove wood, glass, plastic and fabric before weighing so the deduction argument never starts.
  • For very large items, agree in advance whether they will be cut, and who does it safely.
  • Get the net weight, rate and total written down or messaged before payment.

Preparing old almirahs, cots and grills for sale

Empty almirahs completely and remove mirrors and locks you want to keep. Unscrew wooden tops from steel tables and cots - wood weighed as iron is a common source of disputes. Keep loose nails, screws and small parts in one sturdy box. Never try to cut heavy iron with an angle grinder yourself without protective equipment, and always tell the collector about sharp edges or heavy items that need two people to lift.

Five ways to get a better rate for iron

  • Separate heavy, light, cast and stainless items before inviting quotes.
  • Sell in one larger lot instead of several small ones - transport cost per kilo falls.
  • Keep iron dry; heavy rust lowers both weight quality and the grade.
  • Compare at least two same-day quotes for the same grade.
  • Avoid lots where wood or plastic is still attached; buyers price in the effort to strip them.

Selling iron scrap across Bangalore

Locality affects collection logistics more than the price itself. Bulky items in apartments in Whitefield, HSR Layout or Hebbal need lift access and permitted moving hours; independent houses in HBR Layout, Jayanagar or Banashankari may need space for a vehicle to load. Mention access, floor level and the largest item when asking for a quote so there are no surprises on the day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the iron scrap rate today in Bangalore?

It depends on grade, thickness, rust and quantity. Heavy melting iron earns more per kg than light sheet iron or tin. Compare same-day quotes for the same grade; this guide is not a live price feed.

Why is light iron cheaper than heavy iron?

Thin, painted or coated iron loses more weight when melted and costs more to process, so mills and aggregators pay less for it.

Is stainless steel scrap priced the same as iron?

No. Stainless steel contains chromium and often nickel, so it is usually priced higher than mild steel. Keep it separate from ordinary iron.

Should I remove wood and plastic from iron furniture?

Yes, where it is safe to do so. Non-metal parts are either deducted from the weight or lower the grade, so removing them keeps the weighing simple and fair.

How much does rust reduce the iron scrap price?

Light surface rust is normal. Heavily corroded, flaking iron loses usable metal and may be graded lower. Keeping iron dry and under cover protects its value.

Is Baraabar collecting iron scrap now?

Not yet. We are working on pickup logistics and are not accepting bookings or enquiries. Our guides stay available while we prepare to open.
